If you’ve ever wanted to make a quilt but don’t know what you’re doing, now is your chance to avoid half of the challenge. This month Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes and Charm packs are coming to the studio! And no, we’re not talking about baked goods. These are common names for fabric collections that come in pre-cut sizes which can easily be integrated into your next (or first) quilting project.

A “Jelly Roll”, or Strip Set is a collection of 40 fabrics that are 2 1/2″ x approximately 44″ long. Typically the fabrics included in the strip set are all coordinated because they are from one line of fabric. You get a great range in colour, scale of print and design. Here is an example of a project that you can easily make from a Jelly Roll, and a half-yard of fabric.

A “Layer Cake” is a stack of (usually) 42 fabrics, that are pre-cut to 10″ x 10″ square. Just like a Jelly Roll, you get a great variety of coordinated fabrics that are quick and easy to use in that next sewing poject. Not really sure how to quilt? That’s okay, “tie” your project instead of quilting. Simply sew the squares together in a 6 x 7 grid (using all 42 squares) and back it with your favorite fabric. Here’s an easy tutorial on how to “tie” the quilt: The blog Quilting In The Rain has an easy tutorial on how to “tie” a quilt.

Finally, Charm Packs are just like Layer Cakes, but instead of the large squares you’ll get 5″ square cuts of fabric. 5″ squares are commonly used in quilting, and can help you save the time and money it would take to collect 42 different fabrics on you own. Charm squares are great to include in a variety of quilting projects, but can also be used to make a great patchwork bag.

So whether you want to make a quilt, a bag, or just add to your collection of pretty fabrics, check out these three fabulous pre-cut options at the Make Den.
